JIWA KALA
Showcasing an Australian and Indonesian collaboration in music and theatre, JIWA KALA is a multi-disciplinary performance exploring ancient Javanese mythology for clues to preserving the earth's environment.
Featuring new compositions by one of Indonesia’s most daring young composers and singers Peni Candra Rini, dubbed by the Kronos Quartet ‘one of the world’s greatest singers’. Jiwa Kala uses filmed shadow puppetry from master I Gusti Putu Sudarta used as a playful, do-it-yourself canvas for Peni’s shining performance using elements of shadow puppetry and dance along with the power and beauty of her voice.
The ensemble is Peni Candra Rini, Andy McGraw, a percussionist and composer who has worked with Eighth Blackbird and Kronos Quartet, and Shahzad Ismaily who has worked with Laurie Anderson, Milford Graves and Anthony Coleman.
